Gartner is one of the most well reputed research and advisory entities in the cyberspace. Its hype cycle is among the most highly anticipated forecasts each year.
Cloud Security Takes Center Stage
From the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic up until now, we have seen the rates of cloud adoption skyrocket in literal terms. Millions of businesses turned to Cloud Service Providers (CSP) like dinCloud to support remote operations and work from home (WFH) scenarios.
As the rate of cloud adoption has increased, so has the overall threat surface. This in turn has made cloud infrastructures a prized target for cyber criminals more than ever before. Compromising the security of even a single cloud provider can have catastrophic results.
In the wake of this hostile cyber space and increasing cloud solutions, thousands of users have started prospecting for, and investing in cyber security as well as access management solutions for their cloud infrastructures.
Spending Patterns for Cloud Security
According to Gartner’s hype cycle for cloud security, Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) solutions will witness a rapid growth in terms of spending. The forecast growth rate in spending on CASB solutions for 2020 is expected to reach a whopping 45% year on year.
From the year 2021 and onwards, we may see a slight tapering of the spending patterns on CASB solutions but growth will still remain phenomenal. Growth in spending is expected at 40%, 36% and 33% for the years 2021, 2022 and 2023 respectively.
Readiness of Public Cloud Providers
The report also highlights the level of planning and preparedness on the part of Public Cloud Providers like dinCloud. It is highly appreciative of the way CSPs catered to the astronomical demand for cloud solutions in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis.
Cloud Infrastructure Entitlements Management (CIEM)
As per Gartner, CIEM has been added to the cloud security hype cycle for 2020. CIEM solutions rely on statistics, machine learning (ML) and analytics to detect anomalies in the area of account entitlements.
This proves very effective in the case of compromised networks, where the infiltrator keeps accumulating more and more privileged rights without raising any red flags. CIEM solutions prove highly effective in hybrid and multi cloud environments in particular.
SaaS Security Posture Management (SSPM)
With increasing rates of cloud adoption, it was rightly expected that the demand for SaaS applications would also record a proportional increase. SSPM solutions have also been added to Gartner’s hype cycle in cloud security for 2020.
SSPM solutions firstly report on the existing security measures and configurations in place at the SaaS delivery model. The other great aspect of quality SSPM solutions is they also suggest improvements in the existing configurations to further improve security.
Secure Access Service Edge (SASE)
According to Gartner, there is a lot of scope in the SASE sub segment of cloud security. The all encompassing functionality and capability of quality SASE solutions can really streamline the growing trend of remote work.
SASE solutions can prove very effective in the security of Work from Home (WFH) use cases. However, Gartner has also cautioned against certain vendors in the cloud security space that are promising way more than they can actually deliver in terms of cloud security.
As a result, the research giant advocates caution when selecting SASE providers. The issue of selecting the right SASE provider aside, spending is expected to grow on such solutions as remote work becomes the mainstream workforce trend in the short to mid term.
According to Gartner, there is a lot of room for improvement and growth in the cloud security space. Cloud security is quickly becoming an all encompassing domain where automation is expected to take the lead role in the nearest future.
