We find ourselves living in an age where the difference between reality and fiction is blurring with every passing day. Metaverse, an emerging technology whose contours are still not clearly defined, is taking us even closer to that stage.
Say hello to the Metaverse, a “Digital Twin” of the real world we live in, with a twist that in that realm, the only way to limit possibilities is to limit imagination itself. The Metaverse is a whole new, and as yet undiscovered, universe of digital possibilities.
Being aided by cutting edge digital technologies like Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Automation, the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, Blockchain and most importantly, Cloud Computing, the potential is vast.
However, the bigger question that still remains un-answered is, are the IT infrastructures of present day organizations ready, and properly equipped to tap the true potential of the Metaverse. Well, to this day, the answer to this question is in the negative.
The IT modernization initiatives of most organizations, to this day, have been focused mainly around establishing effective remote work capabilities. While this was really essential in the post pandemic world, remote work preparedness alone does not deliver the requisite foundation for businesses to navigate the world of Metaverse.
It is imperative that enterprises and organizations step outside the remote work preparedness zone, and develop expertise in other digital technologies we have cited above. These technologies, once combined in various forms, truly have the potential to convert Metaverse into something “larger than life”, as being anticipated by many.
The specific IT modernization path, or roadmap, which an organization follows will depend on its unique circumstances and use case. The end goal of such IT modernization initiatives, however, should be to deliver highly personalized, almost real-like, and extremely collaborative experiences as well as interactions.
Gone are the days when the CEO of a multi-national would have to hop on a private jet, and fly thousands of miles to attend an important meeting. In the world of the Metaverse, as often depicted in Sci-Fi movies, that CEO would be able to attend the same meeting from the comfort of a personal office, or even a living room of the house.
One thing is for sure though, Metaverse is all set to re-write the boundaries of what constitutes reality, and what is “something really close to reality”. One thing is for sure though, traversing the Metaverse won’t be possible without IT Modernization.
