Xsigo Virtual I/O Helps Cloud Provider Deliver Virtual Desktop Services With Power-User Performance at Entry-Level Pricing
June 7, 2011 – Xsigo Systems, Inc., the leader in I/O virtualization, today announced that dinCloud has deployed Xsigo virtual I/O as the foundation of its converged data center infrastructure powering its unique offering of cloud services. As a result of implementing Xsigo, dinCloud — the first and only cloud service provider to offer a full spectrum of cloud based services ranging from client devices to datacenter and infrastructure — is able to offer the most comprehensive high-end cloud and virtual hosted desktop services.
“dinCloud is pulling away from competitors because we built a virtualized infrastructure that is agnostic, flexible and offers precision control where and when needed,” said Mike Chase, CTO of dinCloud. “Xsigo plays a big role in this, as we built our cloud infrastructure from the ground up using virtual I/O technology, versus the other guys that are using bolt-on technology for their infrastructure.”
Xsigo’s virtual I/O technology helped dinCloud achieve superior performance by delivering 4X the bandwidth of 10G Ethernet to each server and by enabling the precise control needed to ensure a great user experience. With this capability, the company’s hosted desktop services deliver ‘power user’ performance for all user types, not just for segments of users, and enables support for advanced features such as multiple monitors and 1080p HD video streaming.
dinCloud offers a range of cloud services from applications to storage to hosted desktops, each of which delivers enterprise-level features that simplify the journey to the next generation data center. To achieve the company’s objectives it was essential to overcome three limitations of traditional data center infrastructure:
Compute density: To minimize costs, dinCloud sought to maximize server utilization without compromising performance. The company’s high-end servers had sufficient compute capacity to accommodate 170 users each, but would have required eight 10G Ethernet connections per server to avoid I/O bottlenecks. With Xsigo, just two connections provided higher performance at ¼ the cost.
Server uptime: To maximize equipment utilization, it was essential to minimize the downtime imposed by server maintenance and configuration change requirements. “Planned maintenance can take equipment offline for hours, often involves many manual steps, and introduces operational risk, all of which drive up costs,” Chase continued. “With Xsigo we can make changes in software, with fewer steps, and with zero downtime, all of which helps us offer a better quality service at less cost.”
Transparency: Enterprise cloud customers demand predictable service levels that match what users experience with their own data center. In a shared cloud environment, traditional infrastructure lacks the granularity to guarantee application performance, forcing providers to over-provision resources to meet service level agreements. Xsigo’s quality of service features let dinCloud ensure bandwidth to specific applications under all conditions without over-provisioning. Chase explained, “With Xsigo, our environment becomes compartmentalized. If an application misbehaves, we can limit its impact on other applications. When a problem does occur, we can pinpoint the issue to a specific application, something that is nearly impossible with a traditional infrastructure.”
“dinCloud is set to re-define cloud services with high-value offerings at prices that will open new markets,” said Lloyd Carney, CEO of Xsigo Systems. “We are thrilled that dinCloud selected Xsigo virtual I/O to provide the flexible infrastructure needed for their revolutionary service.”
About Xsigo Virtual I/O Virtual I/O technologies consolidate server connectivity and allow a single server connection to act as many, in the same way a virtualized server enables one physical server to appear as multiple devices. With the Xsigo I/O Director, customers can now immediately consolidate their infrastructure, reduce cabling requirements by 70 percent, cut power consumption by 30 percent, and complete routine management tasks in seconds rather than hours or days. Xsigo’s unique virtual I/O technology offers unprecedented levels of performance, scalability, and ease of use, allowing data center managers to connect any server to any network and any storage resource in minutes rather than days or weeks.
