Motocross is a type of motorcycle racing that is held on fenced off-road circuits. The sport developed from motorcycle trials competitions being held in the United Kingdom. Motocross is a physically challenging sport held in all-weather conditions.

History of Motocross

Motocross was first developed in the United Kingdom from motorcycle trials competitions, such as the Auto-Cycle Clubs’s first quarterly trial in 1906 and the Scottish Six Days Trial that began in 1909. When gentle harmonizing and stringent scoring of trials were dispensed with in favour of a race to be the fastest motorcycle rider to the finish line, it was called scrambles, said to have instigated in the phrase, “a rare old scramble” unfolding one such early race. Formerly known as scrambles racing in the United Kingdom, as the sport propagated in popularity, the competitions became known globally as motocross racing, by merging the French word for motorcycle, motocyclette, or moto for short, into a combination with “cross country”. The first known scramble race took place at Camberley, Surrey in 1924.

The 5 Fastest Dirt Bikes in the World

5. Honda CRF 450R (87 mph)

Many dirt bike supporters say the Honda CRF 450R can beat any other dirt bike in a race with the best motorcycle rider in control. Honda’s 2014 model transports more oil flow for better response from the air fork while shearing 2 pounds off the curb weight, taking it down to 243 pounds. The result is a bike made to win races with sprightliness and surperior control.

4. Kawasaki KX 450F (89 mph)

Always a direct contender to the Honda CRF 450R, the Kawasaki KX 450F also packs a 449cc engine capable of spectacular speeding up with a curb weight of 248 pounds. Riders have made this bike a winner on numerous occasions in Motocross race. The furious acceleration permits for quoted top speed of 89 mph on open stretches of land. Kawasaki calls it “the bike that builds champions” for a reason.

3. ATK Intimidator (approx. 110 mph)

Whether packing the Maico 620 or 700 engine, the limited edition ATK Intimidator has always been in the running for fastest dirt bike in the world. The 700 houses a 685cc two-stroke engine capable of 78 hp for a bike with a dry weight of just 238 pounds. Equaled to the wildest dirt bikes that have ever been tested, an ATK Intimidator would have a clear superiority with the right alterations. Racers have pushed the 700 Intimidator to speeds over 110 mph. It looks like only a matter of time before that gets pushed above the record mark. Its year may come in 2014.

2. KTM 450 SX-F (123 mph)

KTM is always producing bikes challenging for wildest two-wheeler on the globe. In the dirt bike category, the 450 SX-F was a Motcross Champion under rider Ryan Dungey. The 449cc engine is used to influence a bike weighing just 237 pounds. Armed with the right rider, KTM 450 bikes can win races among any galloping dirt bikes. With a top speed of 123 mph, KTM’s SX-F sits in a class few bikes can enter. The KTM 500 models hit the same mark in ideal circumstances.

1. BMW 1200 GS Adventure (125 mph)

At a tested top speed around 125 mph, there are few bikes that contend in the same league as the BMW 1200 GS Adventure. Built as a super-fast bike that can challenge any off-road circumstances, this BMW is a fierce yet multipurpose dirt rider. It packs 125 hp and 92 lb-ft of torque, which makes it the most dominant bike on this list by far — though at 573 pounds, it’s also the weightiest.

This weight makes the 1200 GS Adventure harder to fly, yet the devastating 1193cc engine provides steadiness in uneven topography. Like the HP4 known for sport competition, the power thrusts it to the next dimension. A top speed of 125 mph makes it the segment winner.

Speed isn’t everything in dirt bikes made for wild off-road romps, but the combination of raw power and light weights make them capable of furious sprints.

History of Motocross

Motorcycles history instigates in the second half of the 19th century. Motorcycles are derived from the “safety bicycle,” a bike with front and rear wheels of the same size and a lever crank mechanism to drive the rear wheel. Although some early landmarks in its improvement, motorcycles lack a stiff pedigree that can be drawn back to a single idea or mechanism. Instead, the idea appears to have happened to several engineers and discoverers around Europe at the same time.

Excelsior Motor Company, originally a bicycle manufacturing company based in Coventry, England, began manufacturing of their first motorcycle model in 1896, obtainable for purchase by the community. The first assembly motorcycle in the US was the Orient-Aster, built by Charles Metz in 1898 at his factory in Waltham, Massachusetts.

In 1894, Hildebrand & Wolfmüller became the first series production motorcycle, and the first to be called a motorcycle. In 2012, the three top motorcycle producers worldwide by volume were Honda, Bajaj Auto, and Hero MotoCorp.
